The Occitanie region seems to bring him luck! Nearly a year after his last victory, achieved at the Route d’Occitanie, Thibaud Gruel opened his 2026 account during the opening stage of the same race on Thursday. Following outstanding teamwork and a perfect lead-out, the young rider from Tours unleashed his power to finish the job in the sprint. Rewarded after several top results this year, he also claimed the first leader’s jersey of the race.
Last season, the Groupama-FDJ United cycling team ended the Route d’Occitanie with a victory. This Thursday, they took the start of the 2026 edition with the ambition of beginning in the same fashion. The opening stage featured 171 demanding kilometres leading to Saint-Paul-Cap-de-Joux. “The course was interesting, but we weren’t quite sure how the race would unfold,” explained William Green. “Getting into the breakaway was an option, but it formed very quickly after the start. From that point on, we focused all our efforts on supporting Thibaud. We knew he had been in excellent form recently and that the stage suited him, especially with such a difficult final.” Behind a four-man breakaway, Thibaud Gruel’s teammates organized themselves early on. “We decided to put Esteban [Foucher], who came from the development team, in the chase, and he did an exceptional job today, even exceeding our expectations,” William continued. “As we approached the local circuits, we asked Josh to take over, and he turned out to be stronger than he thought, because the gap quickly dropped below a minute. Esteban then resumed control before Josh came back to the front again on the final lap.”
“I’m happy to have won for the guys” – Thibaud Gruel
The early breakaway was finally caught with 38 kilometers remaining, and several attacks animated the final hour of racing over both categorized and uncategorized climbs. “For us, it was mainly about covering attacks,” said William. “We had great confidence in Thibaud, so Olivier neutralized many moves on the circuit, just as Tom and Brieuc did. In any case, the harder the race became, the more it suited Thibaud.” In the day’s final climb, ten kilometers from the finish, more accelerations took place, but everything came back together after the descent. Inside the last three kilometers, a lone rider attempted to surprise the peloton, but the bunch closed him down at high speed shortly after the flamme rouge, driven by none other than Groupama-FDJ United. “The team gradually moved up on the right-hand side, and the final sprint was really led out by Olivier and Tom, who were supposed to drop Thibaud around 400 meters from the line on a slight uphill stretch,” explained William. “In the end, Tom exceeded expectations by taking it all the way to 200 metres, so Thibaud was led-out perfectly.”
With 200 metres to go, the young Frenchman launched out of his teammate’s slipstream and unleashed his power. The result was clear and decisive. Despite hitting the front quite early, the Groupama-FDJ United puncheur held off all challengers and secured a dominant victory. “When he launched with Mikhels on his wheel, I thought it was a bit far out,” said William. “But he was in position, he felt it was the right moment, and he had complete confidence. It was a really impressive sprint.” A few minutes after crossing the finish line, and after warmly thanking his teammates, Thibaud Gruel was able to fully enjoy his first victory of the season. “I had great legs, and so did the team. They believed in me all day long,” he said. “We controlled the breakaway, and then all the guys came back in the final to lead me out perfectly. It was like on the PlayStation! I’m happy to have won for them. It feels really good.” “We’re all very satisfied, especially Thibaud,” added William. “It feels different when every rider contributes to a victory, and that’s exactly what happened today. Winning during this second part of the season was an important goal for Thibaud, so it’s definitely a relief. He had a very high-level race program at the start of the year and has had many opportunities to win in recent weeks. Now he’s done it, and we need to keep his momentum going!”
The 22-year-old will therefore start Friday’s stage wearing the leader’s jersey and could have another opportunity to add a second victory around Saint-Gaudens.
